The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that an element was missing in the song choice.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The series' intro fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
