The Legendary Williams, 45, Receives Wild Card for Her Initial Melbourne Major in Half a Decade.

A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to Melbourne Park

The event organizers confirmed on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old legend will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had previously revealed in November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, a fortnight prior to the Melbourne event. The Australian Open added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Williams stated. "I’ve had so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to go back to a place that has been so significant to my career."

Statistical Highlights

Williams' career statistics at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 defeats. This year will mark the 22nd time she has competed in the main draw.

Setting a Fresh Benchmark

The tournament pointed out that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to compete in an Australian Open singles competition, eclipsing the record previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the first round at the venue in 2015.

Recent Personal Milestone

In late December, Williams wed Denmark-born actor and model Andrea Preti in Palm Beach, Florida.
