Alina Habba has stepped down as the US Attorney for New Jersey. This decision was prompted by a judicial decision that invalidated her legal standing to serve.

Attorney General's Statement

The nation's top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, announced Habba's resignation on the start of the week. She commented that the judicial decision made it "untenable" for Habba to effectively run her office.

"But do not mistake following the order as giving up," she declared. "My fight will now reach across America."

Court Ruling

The departure was triggered by a federal appellate panel determined that she had been serving in violation of the law as the top prosecutor. This ruling is could influence many prosecutions in the state.

The judicial panel declared that a temporary posting that skirted confirmation by the US Senate breached the federal law governing appointments.

Ongoing Legal Battle

It was also stated that Habba will stay on at the justice department as a senior adviser. She will pursue additional appeals of the ruling, with hopes of a overturned decision.

Writing online, the Attorney General argued that judges "cannot be permitted to override the executive's selection of lawyers entrusted with carrying out the primary duty of the administration of prosecuting crime."

Bondi praised Habba's record and said that during her run, the Newark saw a 20% reduction in criminal activity. It was also reported that the city of Camden recorded its first summer in half a century without a homicide.

Legal Career

Habba, 41, originally became part of Donald Trump's lawyers in 2021. She went on to defended Trump in his hush-money trial in New York last year, leading to his guilty verdict on dozens of charges of document fraud.

Prior to assuming the role of US Attorney, the former president had stated he was selecting her as his White House advisor during his second administration, labeling her as deeply loyal and a "tireless advocate for justice".
