Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Relinquishing undesired gifts could be considered somewhat rude – unless it's done for a noble purpose.

A Charitable Auction

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell a reported 270 presents received by her by world leaders on official trips. The diverse haul could include gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.

These items, collectively, are valued at around €800,000. They will be auctioned off via competitive bidding by a Rome-based auction firm. An exact timeline remains to be announced, although the aim is to conduct the sale by year's end, with all funds raised going to non-profit organizations.

Palazzo Chigi Treasures

The presents reportedly stored in a storage room on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. Sources state that Meloni furthermore considering auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been gathering dust for years.

The detailed catalog remains officially released, but some insight were revealed earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was submitted to lawmakers. The discussion focused on if a rule restricting expensive presents was being honored. Legally, a prime minister must declare presents worth more than €300.

A Global Array of Presents

The collection includes:

  • A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
  • A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
  • A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Watercolour paintings from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a board, and several rugs received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the oddest gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.

Diplomatic Context

Meloni has been credited, particularly from her allies, with building relationships with international counterparts and re-establishing Italy as a key protagonist on the world stage once again.

This unique auction symbolizes a distinct method to handle the state presents that accumulate during a leader's tenure.
