Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is departing from the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became public.
The economist stated in a release that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, optimistic about the potential of the enterprise, and anticipate tracking their development".
The former Harvard president, who formerly led the prestigious university, announced on recently that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Email Communications
The recently released messages showed that the official corresponded with the financier until the day before Epstein's 2019 apprehension for alleged trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the technology organization stated it accepted his determination to step down.
"We value his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he brought to the Board," the organization stated.
Political Context
This announcement arrives after both chambers of the US legislature agreed on this week to pass a measure that would compel the federal prosecutors to make public its files on the case.
The legislation will afterward move to the desk of President Trump for approval. Trump has stated he expects to approve the measure, after reversing his view on the subject following pushback from his followers.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of financier-linked emails made public by the legislative panel recently mentioned several high-profile figures in the billionaire's former circle, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The communications showed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often seeking to introduce the academic to influential global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the emails were shared with the public, the former official said he took "total ownership for my misguided judgment to persist in interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he wanted "to restore trust and fix connections with the people closest to me".
Previous Positions
The economist served in leadership roles under Democratic administrations; functioning as economic leader under the former president, and as director of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He presided over the university from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a professor there. When announcing his departure from public roles previously on this week, he stated he would continue his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following his announcement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning think tank in the capital where he was a senior fellow, confirmed that he was ceased to be associated with the group.
Summers entered the directorate of the technology firm, which creates the language model, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its CEO OpenAI's head.
