Hardline Ex- Congressman J.A. Kast Elected as Chile's New Leader.
In a decisive runoff election, far-right politician José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.
A Resounding Victory
After over 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third bid for the presidency, having earlier been lost by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Campaign Focused On Security and Migration
Known for his unwavering socially conservative views and admiration for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was largely focused on promises to combat increasing violence and significantly curb migration.
He frequently blamed immigrants, particularly the roughly 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the campaign, he gave an ultimatum for them to depart before the new term begins or face expulsion.
His proposals envisioned controversial measures such as building camps, high walls, perimeter fencing, and strengthening the army presence on the northernmost frontier.
Within a Regional Wave
Many analysts interpret Kast's success as fitting into a wider right-wing wave in South America, following recent electoral outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other pundits also view it as a continuation of the established swing of power between left-wing and right-wing governments since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.
Leading Without a Strong Mandate
In spite of his decisive popular vote victory, Kast will not hold an absolute majority in Congress, not in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even when all conservative parties are grouped together.
This political situation may complicate his agenda, including a promise to cut public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a measure for which he has yet to offered concrete steps.
"We have many aspects about how a Kast administration will be that are uncertain because he has not detailed his methods for implement them," commented a political professor.
The expert added, "Regarding economic policy, it is very likely we will see austerity policies associated with the right. But the area with much less ambiguity is on public safety, because that has been his flagship issue across the race."
