‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s journey from injury table to goals with Athletic
The initial occasion Gorka Guruzeta competed in the UK, an teenage representing Athletic Bilbao B against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at the English ground in fall 2015, he scored. The second time he took the field in British turf, against the English side following that, he netted. Another occasion, against the Citizens soon after, indeed, he scored again. When he returned to Manchester to face United at Leigh Sports Village in 2017, he did it once more. A spectacular strike, too. “Truly,” he remarks, “it’s a top-class goal in my career.” Thus the club did what they had to do: they substituted him.
“I was furious,” the forward reveals, before breaking into laughter. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I performed well. They didn’t let me play the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, I was scoring goals, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. No confirmation on the Magpies’ pursuit, but I remember reading about Man United, the typical thing. I have no idea the validity, but supposing an offer came, my desire was to remain at Bilbao. I feel lucky to be here.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At Lezama, the Basque Country, the morning session is set to begin; post-session, the brief trip to Loiu and another trip to the UK, now to play Newcastle in the UCL on Wednesday. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. It has become a tough year for Athletic, due in part to the pressures of competing at this level. Defeated late on in the local rivalry, they have secured just a single victory of their recent league fixtures and fallen to the Gunners and Dortmund in Europe. Yet, look at the overall situation, the big nights he has lived and those that lie ahead, and he feels a calm gratitude from him.
In the three years since he had returned to the club, Gorka has been a Europa League semi-finalist, denied at the last hurdle the showpiece event by United, and has traveled on a traditional boat along the Nervión river accompanied by countless supporters after lifting the trophy, the first title in four decades. Currently he stands as the top goal-getter in the Champions League, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he admits.
The player believed it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. As the child of the ex-La Real star Xabi Guruzeta and a regular attendee at the opposition side, Gorka is from the Antiguoko academy, the San Sebastián club that developed the Arsenal manager, the legendary midfielder and Andoni Iraola. He signed for Athletic at his teens but after making his senior debut in the 2018 season, he suffered a ACL injury, dropped, a demotion and a call back before he could earn his place, coming back aged 26 to experience the peak of the club’s history.
“Joining the setup not expecting to reach the top level but each step you advance through you’re remaining and you can see it getting closer. You get there but … you have to leave.” He featured briefly in six matches in half a dozen appearances between his bow and that period. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and I tear my cruciate.
“It was a huge blow but I reflect on it as something positive because it made me change the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it aids growth. You cultivate routines you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I did the sessions and then head home, typical youth behavior. In the facility, you have everything, so do everything. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. If your hips aren’t balanced, correct it. If your ankles are a 10, make it a 12 or a 14. Every small aspect: do them.
“Among professionals you’re going to collide with opponents who have been in battles repeatedly. They’re so strong. I look at photos of me before: my physique was slight. So what happens, happens. Look at pictures of me now and the improvement is clear. The setback taught me. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Teammates are set, really ready; you have to be too.”
Minutes are crucial. He left emotionally in that year, aged 23, dropping into the second division. During his Sabadell spell in the 20-21 campaign, he scored three times in forty appearances. At Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the scoring picked up. “Players go through it: temporary moves, ended deals. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and should the time come they need someone where you play, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, European football, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks this is to be enjoyed. Particularly after the prior campaign which, sometimes, was involved suffering. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
