A minimum of 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Largest Security Action on Gangs
A minimum of 64 civilians were killed in a security raid against the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's records.
Four police officers were among those killed during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials reported. More than 80 individuals were detained.
Fierce clashes broke out when approximately 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho responded with gunfire, setting fire to barriers and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities stated.
The International human rights organization expressed being "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".
Mission Consequences
The slum neighborhoods adjacent to the city's international airport is regarded as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
Government representatives said a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Many residents were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Community members have likened the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.
