A group of seven alleged members of German far-left group stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
